Students have an optional work placement year module ES5111, between L5 (Year 2) and L6 (Final Year). Interested students should speak to their course leader in the first instance. Students may undertake a paid/unpaid overseas placement, and for placements in Europe there may also be an opportunity to secure additional Erasmus funding. You can look for possible Erasmus opportunities at Erasmusintern.org.

Placements can be in any education-related role (subject to agreement from the course leader) and should last for an academic year.  Successful completion of placement and the assessment task is necessary for the module credits.

Unfortunately, at present we do not have any suitable exchange opportunities for this degree programme.

How much does it cost?

Whilst your time abroad will not incur any additional tuition fees, you need to consider the additional costs involved, such as:

  • Flights and other travel
  • Insurance
  • Accommodation
  • Bills
  • Subsistence
  • Visas
  • Don’t let cost stop you from the opportunity of a lifetime - just make sure you budget for the total costs. If funding is available how much can you receive and when? Don’t forget to calculate and compare how much you would spend normally if you didn’t go abroad.

    Erasmus+ funding

    If you want to study in Europe you may be eligible to receive additional funding.

    We are an Erasmus+ Charter Higher Education Institution, therefore, students who study with one of our European partners in specific subject areas may be eligible to receive funding to contribute to the costs of living abroad. Study must allow the student to earn credit as part of their degree. Students typically study for 6 months to a year. Students gain credits for their study abroad as usual (60 CAT points per semester).

    NB: You can only receive Erasmus+ funding for a total of 12 months in any degree cycle. This includes any work placement funding.

    Work in Europe

    If you want to work in Europe you may be eligible to receive additional funding.

    We are an Erasmus+ Charter Higher Education Institution, therefore, students seeking to undertake a work placement (paid or unpaid) in Europe (Erasmus+ programme countries) may be eligible to receive Erasmus+ funding.

    There are three types of placement options open to students, all of which are a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 12 months’ duration:

    • A placement that earns credit towards a student’s degree, e.g. a placement year;
    • A non-credit bearing placement, e.g. a Summer placement (min. 2 months);
    • A graduate traineeship for recent graduates to be undertaken within the academic year after degree completion. Students must apply before they finish their degree studies.

    Notes

    • You can only receive Erasmus+ funding for a total of 12 months in any degree cycle. This includes any graduate traineeship.
    • Funding is not guaranteed and is subject to availability and suitability.
    • Funding is designed to assist with the cost of living and travel, not to cover all costs.
    • The funding amount differs depending on the country of destination.
    • You need to secure your placement yourself, before applying for funding. The website http://erasmusintern.org/ may be useful in your search.
    • Your employer will be required to assist in the completion of the funding application forms.
    • You are expected to undertake a placement in a field relevant to your studies.
    • Typically 70% of the total funding amount will be paid upon arrival at your employer and the final 30% will paid after completion and submission of an online report.
    Application deadlines
    • Ideally, 2 months prior to the start of your placement. However, please still enquire if this time has passed. We advise you to apply as soon as you have a placement secured.
    • Please email erasmus@glos.ac.uk to enquire about funding availability and to request the application form.
