Student Profiles

Jiaqi Wu - BA International Business

jiaqi

As for me, the main attraction of the university is its degree plus programme which helps us to find our internship during our study. Also, the student union provide many volunteer chances to help us so that we can integrate into local culture and overcome the culture shock as quickly as possible. However, the best thing about my course must be the drop-in sessions. They are such great opportunities for me to ask for advice and suggestions from my Academic Review Tutor whenever I had difficulties.

Studying at the university has helped me a lot in terms of improving my communication skills as I’ve had a chance to meet other foreign students. Since different countries have different cultures, I can learn lots about their country, people and language when we discuss with each other.

Yunshi He - BA International Business Studies

University of Gloucestershire is a good business school with good facilities and responsible teaching teams. All my lecturers are very great and have helped me a lot to improve my English and writing skills. Besides the lectures, I also love the academic seminars as they are good opportunities for me to communicate with and learn new ideas from other students.

So far I have enjoyed my studying time in the UK. I also try to make time for exploring Cheltenham and enjoy myself out of school time.

Yangyu Xie - BA International Studies

yangyu

At first, I found it difficult to settle into UK in general but everything soon became easier with the good help, starting from the airport, of the International Students Team. After that we have the International Welcome Week with detailed schedules which really helped us as we received information on many things including enrolment process, police registration and accommodation setting.

My lectures take place in big lecture rooms with nice atmosphere; the lecturers are brilliant as they have high educational background. They make complex things simpler and easier to understand and give us detailed requirements and a lot of support with the assignments.

Yu Shao - Accounting and Financial Management Studies

yu shao

I chose the University because of the generous and supportive lecturers and tutors and the wonderful living and study environment. The lecturers and tutors helped me a lot during my time and I learned a lot from them.

The course gave me opportunities to do presentations and write essays, not just take examinations, so it encouraged me to think and analyse in a different way, rather than repeating and remembering facts. I gained a lot from the course and style of teaching at the University of Gloucestershire and in particular developed my communication skills and problem solving ability.

I have just finished two years’ work in the Ernst & Young Beijing office and have now started a job in a financial company. The experience at Gloucestershire gave me the opportunity to work for Ernst & Young. Going abroad and studying at Gloucestershire was the most wonderful choice I have made and I miss my lecturers and tutors Ming, Kim and Angela.

Xie Wenbin - BA Hons IT Management

The studying environment at the University of Gloucestershire, which I enjoy the most out of my time in the UK, was brilliant with small sized classes and enthusiastic lecturers. They are very knowledgeable at their field with real world experience and always willing to help, no matter what your problem is. All lectures were great but I feel the most comfortable in David’s and Shunjun’s classes. Through my studying, I have chances to improve so many useful skills such as essay writing, English communication and also build up my self- confidence. With all those experience, I am now working at China National Building Material Group as Marketing Manager and responsible for keeping the relationship with our clients oversea.

Shuobin Cai - BA (Hons) Accounting and Financial Management Studies

shuobin

I choose to study at the University of Gloucestershire as there was a link between the University of Gloucestershire and my university in China, Beijing Wuzi University. I really enjoyed my time at the University both the studying and the lifestyle. I liked being in charge of my life, including the flexible study schedule and daily activities. All of the courses were new and interesting for me and besides the academic knowledge I gained, I also developed a new way of seeing things through logical thinking. The ability to learn new things was the most valuable part I gained from the course.

I am working as a consultant at PwC management consulting and this opportunity was thanks to my choice to study at Gloucestershire

Yifan Huang - BA (Hons) International Business Studies

The University’s International Welcome Week, including campus tours and induction talks, as well as the Treasure Hunt game, was really helpful in terms of helping new students like me get used to surrounding environment and settle down. I was also offered free picking up service from the London Heathrow Airport, provided information about how to use UoG website and get the book I wanted in a short time as well as the help from our personal tutor.

Out of all the modules, I like Culture Issue in Management best as the unique cultural knowledge it offered during learning and group discussion. By learning this course, I am getting well to know that Human Resource Management should consider more than just employees, but also the general environment.

Mandi Liu - BA (Hons) International Business Studies

I have completed 2 years of studying the International College program at the University of Gloucestershire before progressing to my BA course at the University. The greatest advantage about this is you can experience both Chinese and UK higher education quality at the same time, which means one can have a deeper understanding of the theories while improving your English skills. The tutors were really helpful and friendly, making my time here even more enjoyable. The best thing I’ve gained from the course was the ability to understand and apply various models and frameworks to real life

Huihua Zhuo - BA (Hons) International Business Studies

huihua

The thing I like the most out of studying time here is the special teaching mode that encourage students to think and create their own ideas instead of just the professors tell how to do and what they need to do. Our teachers always help us when we need. They treated us like their friends. As a result, I gained a lot from my course, especially the method to a rounded analysis and accurate quotation in an essay.

Qian Gao - Landscape Architecture

qian

The main reason why I chose University of Gloucestershire to undertake my degree in Landscape architecture is because it is highly recommended by Landscape Institute and I'm glad I chose it. The course is very well structured which enables me to learn knowledge of landscape design and planning. The end of year show is such a great opportunity as we can look at other's work and present our own design.

I enjoyed my studying time here, especially at our landscape studio located in Francis Close Hall campus. It actually become a small social place where students and tutors can discuss our works and daily life. Thanks to the well-structured course, I have learned useful and practical knowledge as well as a designer mind-set and skills, enabling me to work as Assistant Landscape Architect in Randle Siddeley, London.

Qiao Li - BA (Hons) International Business Studies

My daily life in the past 20 years was all around school, such as I spent days and weeks to prepare the biggest Chinese university enrolling exam, and study English for entering the British University. Fortunately, I achieved the opportunities to study at University of Gloucestershire from July 2015.

My life in China is totally different from the life in the UK. In China, I was living with my parents for 18 years, they were taking care of me from almost every perspective. However, the life in the UK is much more independent than I expected. In the past half year in the UK, I rent a house by myself, travelled around the country, finishing plenty of assessments and doing more works than the request.

There are few reasons influenced me in the decision of choosing the university in abroad. First is I was looking for the place to learn about the capitalism business system in the world. Second is because the University of Gloucestershire located at Cheltenham, this place is famous as its healthy environment and lived many rich and high educated people. The last but not least, there are not many Chinese people study in this University, which means I would get a truly British environment.

Xianting Zhu - BA (Hons) International Business Studies

As a top up student, I studied in the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Guangzhou, China before I came to Cheltenham last September.

There are several reasons I chose to study here and the main one is the reputation. One of my father’s friends who used to be a visiting scholar of the University of Gloucestershire and he highly recommended this university due to its teaching quality, advanced facilities and qualified excellent lecturers. The funding is another reason because the tuition here is relatively low compared to other universities. And the UoG provides a variety of scholarships especially for international students, the 50% deduction of the total tuition made me feel happy and decide to study here. Besides, the location can be another factor. Based in Gloucester and Cheltenham, the university provides me a safe  and cosy place to live, allowing me to concentrate on my study. And the short distance to Birmingham and Bristol allows me to have a lot of activities and entertainments on weekends.

I really enjoyed the last 7 months here in the University of Gloucestershire. I’ve made many local friends, attended some church activities, and received help from lecturers and other staff of the university. I would say that the UoG can be the best place to go to and won’t let you down.

Liying He - BA (Hons) Landscape Architecture

I found out about this course from my friend who studied Landscape Architecture at University of Gloucestershire before. She was very fond of the university, so she inspired me to come to Cheltenham and study the course. I also wanted to come to the University of Gloucestershire because I found out that it was the first established landscape architecture course in the UK.

What I love most about the course is the close-knit environment we have with our tutors and other students. The tutors are very supportive, friendly and always willing to give their own time to help us individually and give us the advice we need to produce not only the best academic work, but also life outside of the classroom.

There are many things that I have enjoyed participating in at the university. My favourite has been the international society which takes place every Wednesday. This has been the chance to meet and make many friends from various places around the world. They even provided free hot chocolate and snacks, as well as ping pong, billiards, table football and card/board games.

I will return to China when I graduate from Gloucestershire in 2016. I very much hope I can enter the academic practice of landscape architecture by working in my former university located in my hometown of Guiyang. This will enable me to learn more about teaching, design and provide me with more real life experience. Eventually I hope to fully teach the landscape architecture course in China, sharing my experience of studying in the UK and inspire future students to understand to wonderful opportunities and possibilities of how landscape architecture can change the world.
