Courses in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)

Courses in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) are available through the INTO University of Gloucestershire Centre, a British Council accredited centre. We deliver courses lading to professional qualifications as well as taster days for those who have an initial interest in TEFL.

For students studying at the University of Gloucestershire we also deliver a level module in teaching English as a foreign language.

For those wishing to study for an internationally recognised, professional  qualification, the centre delivers CELTA courses leading to the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults. This qualification is awarded by Cambridge Assessment English.

There are two types of CELTA course available.

  • Short, intensive (five week) face to face courses which require full daily attendance in the centre
  • Longer (13 week)  blended learning courses which include online study and some attendance in the centre, mainly for teaching practice, which takes place twice a week in the evenings.

Both courses are designed for those who have little or no experience in teaching English as a foreign language, or those with some experience who require a professional qualification to improve their career prospects.

We’re very proud of our reputation for delivering high quality courses with excellent support as well as our results. The courses are taught by a highly experienced team of trainers all of whom are permanent members of the teaching team. Two of our trainers are also CELTA external assessors, which means they are employed by Cambridge to visit other centers as part of the standardization of the award. We take a maximum of 12 on any course which means we are able to provide extensive support and the extended nature of the Face to Face course allows us to include additional tutorials and sessions on areas such as Teaching Young Learners and Teaching Business English.

The course includes information about career prospects and as a centre committed to high quality training, we may also offer temporary employment to  some of our ex CELTA trainees particularly during the summer.

More information about these courses (including how to apply and course dates and fees) is available in the CELTA brochure and on the CELTA website.

For those who are interested in TEFL, but are not ready to commit to a longer course, we offer taster days at various times of the year. The taster days are an introduction to TEFL and may include sessions on:

  • Introduction to Language Awareness (Tenses)
  • Language Terminology
  • Learning a foreign language
  • Work and Career Prospects

Undergraduate students studying at the university may be able to take EF 6301, a 30 credit module at level 6. You can find more information about this module here. (Add PDF of TEFL module Overview)
