Entry requirements

Please ensure you have the following documents/information prepared and ready to submit with your online application form.

Doctoral level research degrees (PhD, DBA, DEng, DMC, DSE)

You will need at least the following:

  • A cognate masters qualification or equivalent;
  • Details of two referees (at least one academic)*;
  • International students need IELTS 6.5 overall, with 6 in Writing and 5.5 in other bands or equivalent.

Masters level research degrees (MPhil**, MRes, MA/MSc by Research)

You will need at least the following:
• Upper second class honours degree or equivalent;
• Details of two referees (at least one academic)*;
• International students need IELTS 6.5 overall, with 6 in Writing and 5.5 in other bands or equivalent.

* In order to prevent delays, we recommend that you contact your chosen referees before submitting your online application, making them aware that we will soon be requesting a reference in support of your application.
** Please note that we do not currently offer the MPhil programme in the Faculty of Business, Education and Professional Studies.

Research proposal

As part of your application, you will be required to provide a brief summary of your proposed research project, limited to 1000 words. This should include title, hypothesis(es)/questions, contextualisation, methodology and brief bibliography. This can be uploaded as a Word or PDF document. When does it start?

Students normally begin their research programme in November or July. The DBA programme currently starts in November each year.

Due to the time needed to review and process your application, we strongly advise you to apply at least one calendar month before your intended start date. International students requiring a student visa and applying from outside of the UK should allow at least two calendar months.

Any application received after this time will be considered on a case by case basis and, although every effort will be made to accommodate late applications, please note that your entry onto the chosen programme may be deferred until the next programme start date, should an offer of study be made.
